Question about turtles?

Today I saw a turtle crossing the road. I swerved to avoid hitting it and thought about going back to move it to the ditch. But it occurred to me that it could be a snapping turtle or another dangerous type. Is there any way to tell the difference in general just by looking at a turtle who is and is not dangerous?
